Frankenstein's monster is a big guy and deserves to be seen on the big screen. Here, he's played by Jacob Elordi, himself a big guy made all the more menacing and nuanced by past Best Director Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro. By staying nearer to Mary Shelley's 1818 novel, del Toro reinvigorates the monster with humanity and pathos while leaning into the story's epic scale. Victor Frankenstein (played by a wild-eyed and wild-haired Oscar Isaac), meanwhile, gets an overdue reexamination and returns to the novel's characterization as he slaps together cadavers to make the world's first thoroughly modern man.
