Art History Symposium — "Being Seen Listening: Sound Politics in African Photography"

-

Location: 200 Riley Hall (View on map )

The Department of Art, Art History & Design presents the annual Art History Symposium. Clare Barloon and Kendra Lyimo will present research from their honors thesis. The keynote speaker is Antawan I. Byrd, Northwestern University.

This lecture examines how sound technologies and photography mutually mediated ordinary engagements with struggles for decolonization in Africa during the mid-twentieth century. Focused on a corpus of photographs, ranging from documentary images to studio portraiture, Byrd explores the art historical stakes of being seen listening during situated moments of political change.
