The de Nicola Center hosts a major roundtable discussion, "Building a Civilization of Love," featuring leading experts on law, medicine, public health, social service nonprofits, and social science, including Heather Hacker (partner, Hacker Stephens LLP, former Assistant Solicitor General of Texas), Senator Katrina Jackson (Louisiana State Senate, Democrat, District 34), Mary Hallan Fiorito (Cardinal George Fellow of the de Nicola Center, former Vice-Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Chicago), Leah Libresco Sargeant (author and public policy expert), and Monique Wubbenhorst Chireau, M.D., M.P.H. (de Nicola Center for Ethics and Culture, former faculty at Duke Medical School, former senior official in Global Health at USAID).
As the primary engine for driving forward Notre Dame's institutional commitment to building a culture of life and civilization of love, the de Nicola Center is proud to spearhead the “Women and Children First Initiative,” the University's signal effort to help construct a post-Roe world in which mothers, babies (born and unborn), and families are protected and cared for as they deserve. Concretely, this initiative involves a sustained and coordinated effort across the disciplines to provide research and publications both for academic, general, and policy expert audiences; academic conferences both in the U.S. and abroad; course development; support for faculty, students, and visiting scholars; expert advice for governmental, private sector, and nonprofit audiences; and broad dissemination and publication of the fruits of these efforts in the global public square. Areas covered include the legal, policy, social, and ethical dimensions of issues regarding health care, housing, education, employment, poverty, racial justice, religious liberty, and international human rights, among others.
