Please join the Center for Italian Studies and the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies for the presentation of the monumental Italian translation of James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake and a roundtable discussion.
On the occasion of the publication of the final volume of the Italian translation of Joyce’s Finnegans Wake, completed by Enrico Terrinoni and Fabio Pedone on May 4, 2019 – the eightieth anniversary of the original publication of Joyce’s definitive book – all six volumes will be presented to Notre Dame’s Hesburgh Libraries. Complete translations of Joyce’s Finnegans Wake have appeared only in some ten world languages so far, and the Italian one, a project begun in 1982 with Luigi Schenoni, is the first to include parallel English text, a full critical apparatus, glossaries, and annotations. The event will include a roundtable on the issues of translatability and reading as a modality of "infinite translation,” featuring one of the two Italian translators and editors of the work, Enrico Terrinoni, Professor of English Literature at the Università per Stranieri di Perugia and Visiting Faculty Fellow at the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies at the University of Notre Dame, as well as Declan Kiberd, Donald and Marilyn Keough Professor of Irish Studies, and Theodore J. Cachey, Jr., Ravarino Family Director of Italian & Dante Studies, with the participation of David Lummus, the assistant director of the Center for Italian Studies, and the Finnegans Wake Reading Group.
