Location: 1050 Jenkins Nanovic Halls (View on map )

Numerous tea light candles with warm flickering flames glow brightly in red holders against a dark, blurred background of more lights.

The Nanovic Institute for European Studies will host its annual observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27) with a guest lunch lecture by Eliyana Adler, professor of history and Judaic studies at Binghamton University. All are invited.

Adler's lecture is titled "Gravestones in Words and Pictures: Yizker Books as Grassroots Holocaust Commemoration."

A Kosher lunch will be available beginning at 12:00 p.m., while supplies last.

About the Speaker

A woman, Eliyana Adler, with curly brown hair and a maroon headband smiles at the viewer, wearing a matching knitted cardigan.
Eliyana Adler

Eliyana Adler is a student and teacher of East European Jewish history, with a particular focus on Poland and the USSR. Her first book, In Her Hands: The Education of Jewish Girls in Tsarist Russia (WSUP, 2011), examined the history of education and her second book, Survival on the Margins: Polish Jewish Refugees in the Wartime Soviet Union, followed the experiences of a group of Jewish refugees in the midst of the war and the Holocaust. Currently, she is working on a project about post-Holocaust Jewish memorial books.

Professor Adler enjoys sharing her love of historical methods and Eastern Europe with students.

Please note: Due to winter storms, this talk will be offered as a hybrid event. Eliyana Adler, our lecturer, will join via Zoom, though we will still gather in person in 1050 Jenkins Nanovic Halls with lunch (while supplies last), where our director will welcome those in attendance and introduce our esteemed speaker. Those who wish to join the lecture via Zoom may do so at or just before 12:30 p.m. by clicking the button below. Thanks for your understanding.
