Performance by the Dover Quartet

Location: LaBar Recital Hall (View on map )

With awe-inspiring and utterly beguiling playing, the Dover Quartet plays luscious music for string ensemble, including Haydn's "Rider," one of the composer's crowning achievements, and Florence Price's String Quartet No. 1 in G major. Immerse yourself in the lush sound of music for string ensemble played by one of the most in-demand chamber ensembles in the world.

This satisfying hour-plus performance begins with String Quartet, Op. 74, No. 3, "Rider." It's no wonder this piece is a favorite in string ensemble concerts, as Haydn truly lets it rip in an outpouring of striking, attention-grabbing expression. Price, a 20th-century African-American composer with a formidable body of work almost lost due to her race and gender, displays the influence of Brahms and Dvořák right from her first movement's gentle, hymn-like opening theme through its unusual harmonic twists and rhythmic unpredictability are all her own. The Dover Quartet appears by arrangement with the Curtis Institute of Music, where it serves as the Penelope P. Watkins Ensemble in Residence.
