This year marks the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death which is being celebrated throughout the world with a rich array of commemorative events, including conferences, lectures, readings, exhibits, and concerts.
Pope Francis has also joined the celebrations with the release of an Apostolic Letter titled “Candor lucis aeternae” (Splendor of Light Eternal) in which, commenting on the depth and timelessness of Dante’s poem, he notes:
“At this particular moment in history ... the figure of Dante, prophet of hope and witness to the human desire for happiness, can still provide us with words and examples that encourage us on our journey.”
