The world is on the brink of global health history by achieving the eradication of the wild poliovirus. Only one other human disease has been eradicated and that was smallpox in 1980. This lecture will detail the origins of the polio eradication effort, with a special focus on the role of Rotary International, the volunteer service organization that first had the vision of a polio-free world. Progress to date, challenges, and what remains to be done to finish the job will be discussed, as will the partnership that makes up the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
