Schola Musicorum Abend-Musique 50, Recovering Notker’s Sequences, Text and Music: A Celebration of Calvin M. Bower’s New Edition of the Liber ymnorum of Notker Balbulu.

Einsiedeln 121 Notker Summi Triumphum

Three divisions of the University of Notre Dame — the Department of Music, the Medieval Institute, and the Sacred Music Program — join forces to celebrate medieval scholar Calvin M. Bower’s award-winning 2016 edition of the tenth-century Liber ymnorum of Notker Balbulus. Graduate-student singers drawn from the Sacred Music Program join Professors Daniel Hobbins and Alexander Blachly to perform twelve sequences from this rich repertoire of late chant. DMA student Benjamin A. Stone will perform early organ works.

The concert in Reyes Organ and Choral Hall will be preceded at 8 pm by two lectures in the Philbin Studio Theatre, DeBartolo Performing Arts Center. Professor Bower and Professor of Classics Martin Bloomer will speak on different aspects of Notker’s poetry. A reception in the DPAC lobby will follow the Schola Musicorum performance.
