Marty Supreme channels the nostalgia of films made in the 1980s that were set in the 1950s and were, ostensibly, about those filmmakers' dads. As such, this film set in 1952 New York reverberates between the Silent Generation and Boomers and, on the strength of a ping pong sports movie narrative, manages to create a fresh, exhilarating film that feels, somehow, thoroughly modern. Marty Mauser (Timothée Chalamet) wants to rule the world if he could just get out of his shoe salesman gig and the Lower East Side apartment he shares with his mom (Fran Drescher). A table tennis champion with designs to make the sport the next baseball, Marty goes through a series of harrowing ordeals with some sketchy moral choices to accomplish his dreams and gain the respect he knows he deserves.
