The Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study invites you to a screening of Nomadland, the first film in its Resilience Film Series.
Throughout the series, the NDIAS will examine the lessons that films can teach us about resilience, the organizing research theme of the Institute during 2021-2022.
A panel discussion will occur after the screening featuring Pamela Wojcik (Professor, Film, Television, and Theatre), Daniel Graff (Professor, History), and Claire Scott-Bacon (Graduate Fellow, NDIAS).
Winner of the Best Picture Oscar, Nomadland is one of the most praised and discussed films of the last year.
Director Chloé Zhao, herself an Oscar (and many other awards) winner for her work here, guides together the loneliness, precarity, and growth of Fern (Frances McDormand), a woman who loses both her husband and her job in the wake of the Great Recession. Pushed on the road as a van-dwelling nomad, Fern finds support systems among folks in similar station (often played by real-life nomads) as she adapts to a new life.
