Social media offers new ways for citizens to discuss and debate politics and engage in the democratic process. These online platforms can host rich policy relevant debate or provide space for disinformation and hate speech. In this talk, Best will overview his lab's experience tracking and responding to social media content during national elections, especially in African nations. He will then foreshadow the lab's current work to develop machine learning classifiers designed to identify hate speech in the forthcoming election in Myanmar.
