This joint exhibition is between the University's Introductory Drawing, 2-D and 3-D Foundations courses from the Fall 2017 semester.

Becoming:
We live in a moment of intense ecological crisis, and this fact has made the “natural” world more conspicuous, more precious, and more contested than it has been for previous generations. Yet, through scientific advancement, our understanding of what “Nature” is has changed, and along with it, our ideas about human beings’ relationship to “Nature.” BECOMING features works by young artists exploring the complexity of ecological systems (and the place of humans in those systems), the cultural attitudes and images of Nature held by Western people historically and currently, and the urgency of the crises facing the planet. All works were created in the Introductory Drawing course in Notre Dame’s Department of Art, Art History, and Design, as part of a semester-long investigation.
Connections:
It is often a connection with our built surroundings, personal relationships, global events, and everyday encounters that mold our way of thinking. These unique experiences help establish a way of seeing the world and critiquing ourselves. At the beginning level of an academic art track, students are prompted to research and explore these connections to create art using a variety of materials and techniques. Students are also challenged to pull from personal experiences, but find ways of relating their ideas more universally. In this exhibition, students explore connections to home, the environment, family, business, and self.
